Pic Today 5/3/10

Any wonder why they're called
"bearded" iris?

This interior tuft (or beard) on iris petals
actually facilitates pollination,
as visiting insects (especially honey bees)
brush new pollen on its "beard hairs."
Bearded iris are a perfect low-maintenance
dependable flower for the weekend gardener.
They come in a wide variety of colors
and flower year after year.
(No shaving required!)
