AND GOING STRONG
at Missouri Botanical Garden,
is the first geodesic dome to be used
as a greenhouse conservatory, and
in 1976 was named one of
"the 100 most significant architectural
achievements in United States history."
Hard to believe it's celebrating its
50th birthday this year!
Open to the public in 1960,
the Climatron has no interior support and
no columns from floor to ceiling,
making it an ideal greenhouse structure
for maximum light and space.
The interior is a controlled tropical rain
forest environment, year round, and contains
over 1,400 different plant species --
including the rare "double coconut tree"
which produces the largest seed of any
plant on earth.
