Pic Today 9/1/10

A DEADLY BEAUTY
WITH MANY NAMES

Every part of the beautiful night flowering datura
is poisonous and can be fatal
but its transformation from day to night
is breathtaking to behold.

This one wild flower has many names:
Moon Flower, Devil's Trumpet, Deadly Nightshade,
Witches Weed, Thorn Apple, Jimson Weed.

The tall blooms slowly unfurl as the sun sets
to reveal magnificent white flowers,
which ripen into thorny seed pods in late summer.
(There are a host of pollinating insects
which only do their work at night.)
