HOW LEAVES DO IT
It's always a miracle for me each fall
when leaves do their magic
and turn from green, to red, and orange, and yellow.
In fact, it's not a change from green pigment to
the warm colors of autumn.
It's a chemical transformation we're witnessing now.
It's the cooler temperatures, and rainfall,
and shorter daylight hours that cause trees
to stop producing chlorophyll
(the green stuff in plants).
The remaining chlorophyll already in leaves
undergoes a transformation into colorless chemicals.
The pigments that produce fall colors
have been present all along. And with the chlorophyll
now becoming colorless, VOILA!
The fall color show is now before you.
Pretty nifty trick if you ask me.
