ST. LOUIS MONUMENT
TO RAILROAD CENTER OF THE WORLD
St. Louis Union Station still stands
and is busy in a different way today,
but was once the largest and busiest
train station in the world!
Built in 1894, St. Louis Union Railway Station
included a 42-track train shed, 280' clock tower,
a gold leafed Grand Hall and 65' vaulted ceiling.
At its busiest (1930s and 40s) it handled
100,000 passengers a day.
The famous photo of Harry Truman holding the erroneous
Chicago Tribune headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman",
was shot at the station, as he headed back to
Washington, D.C. from Independence, Missouri.
Today the original building houses a luxury hotel,
shopping center and entertainment complex.
The grandeur of the station can still be seen
and felt inside this 15-acre complex.
