THE MAIDEN GINKGO

The magic of the ginkgo tree
is truly in its leaves . . .
which resemble yellow fans in autumn,
and now proven to contain an extract
to treat Alzheimer's disease.

The ancient ginkgo is one of earth's oldest trees.
Fossils of this venerable tree have been
traced back to the early Jurassic period,
some 270-million years ago.

Its classic beauty
is perhaps why this long-lived tree
was cultivated by early Chinese civilization.
(Some living ginkgo trees have reached ages
well beyond 1,000-years.)

Leathery ginkgo leaves are blanketing the ground
in yellow now, which means winter is on its way.

  3. What a perfect specimen of a leaf you captured up there, Rick! Ginkgo is such an interesting tree. I drew the ginkgo several times. One of them here: http://cesandherdishes.blogspot.com/2009/09/illustration-friday-pattern.html

Thank you for reminding me of this tree again.

  9. Hi Rich; I remember picking up these little yellow leaves with my daughter back in New York. A bunch of these trees toguether may pass unnoticed in the summer; but certainly not in the fall. Best wishes from afar,
    Jorge
