THE BROWNS OF DROUGHT

This relentless heat and drought . . .

it sucks the summer colors and bounty
out of our fields and gardens.

It's killing the flowers, the crops,
and now the trees, slowly but surely.

Maybe the plants are storing
what life they have left
in their roots, deep in the ground,
for another season.

We can only hope and pray.
