AMISH QUILTS:
FOR THE BED, FOR THE BARN

Amish quilts are world famous
for their fine hand stitching & graphic design.
(Vintage Amish quilts have sold
at auction for 6-figures!)

But not until you drive through
Amish country in Iowa
(especially Washington County),
do you see a different, bolder side of
Amish quilt designs . . .
"barn quilts."

Giant, hand painted "quilts" are
affixed to the sides of barns,
in dazzling colors and geometric designs.
It takes this respected Amish craft
to a whole new level,
for roadway enjoyment.

(Side note:  The 5 Amish dolls
in the first photo are turn-of-the-century
hand sewn child dolls with no faces.
The Amish do not pose for photographs,
nor represent faces in any of their crafts,
an objection based on the scriptural
admonition to "make no graven image."
Facial images and photographs
are interpreted as a form of idolatry.)

  1. Love the geometric designs :)
But the dolls with no face, uh creepy.

  2. So beautiful. I would like to own one someday. The good ones are quite pricey. Have a beautiful day!
