SETTING RECORDS
FOR JANUARY WEATHER

Oh this crazy weather!

Yesterday . . . 74˚ (F),
This morning . . . 36˚ (F).

With severe weather in between.
Lots of wind and rain.

(But we need the rain.)

SUNDAY DRIVE
IN THE COUNTRY

Random scenes.
Getting lost in the country,
and in my thoughts.

Raining all day.
No one else on the road.

Life is simpler
away from the city.

MY SURGEON
PRESCRIBED HONEY

I've got some surgery coming up,
which will include a long incision.
And my doctor has prescribed honey
in an unexpected way.

As incisions heal, they are prone to infection
in the first week following surgery.
He has prescribed raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized honey
as a wound dressing . . . it is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory,
naturally antiseptic, and reduces swelling and pain.

Of course I paid a visit to my good friend
and bee-keeper, Joy Stinger (real name)
to get some fresh honey, still in the honeycomb.

You can be sure honey has never been heated
or pasteurized when it's still in the comb.

Thank you, Joy.
Thank you, honey bees.

SCENES FROM A
LATE JANUARY MISSOURI

The weather is confused here.

Last week, shocking temperatures in the teens.
Tomorrow, sunny and in the 60s.

This is late January in Missouri.
Nature will wait until the weather settles out.

We're ready for Spring.
(But not yet.)

SNEAK PEEK
OF 2013 ORCHID SHOW

This is the time of year
when orchids burst into bloom.

One week to go
before the opening of the
2013 Orchid Show
at Missouri Botanical Garden.

This year's show features
the exotic orchids of Madagascar,
and marks the Garden's 25th anniversary
of plant research and conservation work
in this island country.

More than 600 orchids from the Garden's
historic collection will be on display,
starting February 1.

Orchids are indeed nature's masterpieces!

ALWAYS CHOOSE
A WINDOW SEAT

Every time you fly.

And try to get behind the wing
for an unobstructed view of the world.

Some of my favorite views:

Clouds dancing above the blue Caribbean.

Mountain fault lines in northern California.

Cloud shadows above the Colombian Amazon jungle.

River frost tracing the flow of the Shenandoah.

Contour farmland in southern Illinois.

Fabulous views if you're lucky
 and in a window seat . . .

And you remember to bring your camera!

FIRST THE COLD,
NOW THE SNOW

It's been an unseasonably warm winter.
Until now.

3 days of very cold temps
(in the teens!)

And now, without warning,
a snow has covered the ground.

I do worry about "global warming,"
just not this week.

BEST BARISTAS
SHOW THEIR STUFF

Coffee baristas competed for top honors
in Kansas City, Missouri,
to earn the chance to attend the U.S. National
Barista Championship in Boston this April.

Each barista had 15 minutes to prepare and serve
12 espresso beverages in front of 7 judges.
They earn points for technical skills, precision,
creative presentation and of course taste!

Contestants were allowed to add their own
ingredients, roast their own beans,
create their own recipe (and story) . . .
and bring their own cheering section.

What a show!

I'M OFF TO KANSAS CITY
TO COVER THE MIDWEST
U.S. BARISTA CHAMPIONSHIP

The best baristas from Midwest states
will compete for their chance
to earn a spot at the U.S. Finals.

This is the way it works . . .

The best to the test.

Each state, each region,
to the top of their nation.

And then
on to the World Barista Championship
in Melbourne, Australia (May, 2013.)

BE BACK MONDAY!

MY POOR LUNGS

That "cotton candy" looking stuff
deep in my lungs*

(*Chest X-Ray, Jan 15 2013)

. . . is mycoplasma Pneumonia.

My doctor's advice:

"Next time you have a cough
for more than one month,
come get a chest x-ray."

(OK, doc.   I promise.)

WHERE MY BODY IS THESE DAYS . . .

  WHERE MY MIND IS . . .

I am soooo ready for Spring.

Now that Ol' Man Winter
has kept his promise (brrrrr),
my heart and soul
belong somewhere tropical.

Mmmm.

IT'S CAMELLIA TIME

in the old Linnean Greenhouse
at Missouri Botanical Garden.

Built in 1882, by Henry Shaw,
the Linnean Greenhouse is the oldest
continuing operating greenhouse
west of the Mississippi.

In late 2011, this magnificent landmark
"coldframe sash" greenhouse went through
a re-fit, with upgraded ceiling glass,
copper gutters and complete tuckpointing.
All the original brickwork was retained.

In order to run new steam pipes underground,
all the original (and rare) camellia trees
needed to be dug up and transplanted to
temporary quarters.   All plants have been
re-established, and as you can see . . .
the original camellias are happily blooming again!

(While it's freezing cold outside.   Brrrr.)

WHEN CHEFS
COOK FOR THEMSELVES

Nothing fancy . . .
just too much great food,
enough to drink
(for thirst is a dangerous thing),
and the chance to enjoy each other
without any customers to serve.

We'll clean up the dishes
in the morning.
