THE MOREL MOMENT

It was the exact moment,
following all our cold rainy days,
two days -- two fleeting days --
when clouds disappeared and
thermometers hit the 80s.

Kapow!
Morels everywhere.

Morel mushrooms found their moment,
and sprouted underfoot.

Timing is everything.
Time to walk in the woods.

It's morel mushroom time!

THE SACRED REDBUD

It's no wonder the mid plains Native Americans
called the North American redbud "sacred."
Everything about this tree is special,
and strikingly beautiful.

With our very wet Spring,
the redbuds are blooming intensely
with brilliant shades of reds and pinks.

As the redbud matures, it's one of the few trees
that sprouts flowers directly from the bark
of the trunk and branches,
like compact flower "bouquets."

And then there's the leaves . . .
perfect hearts throughout the season,
after the red flowers have gone.

Fortunately, redbuds are abundant
throughout Missouri woodlands.

37 COUNTRIES
400 ROBOTS
2,000 STUDENT COMPETITORS

Young student scientists gathered
in St. Louis this past week,
to compete in the
2013 International Robotics Championship.

Nearly 20,000 advisors, friends, parents
and robot enthusiasts were on hand
to cheer on these high school teams
from around the world.

All remotely controlled,
robots were put to the test to
throw frisbees, speed against the clock
and roll over their competition.

Future engineers and scientists
showed off their machines
to the an enthusiastic audience.

IT'S DOGWOOD TIME

The flowering dogwood tree
is Missouri's state tree,
and has just come into bloom.

Pink dogwoods are popular cultivars,
and are commonly planted
in backyards throughout the state.

But wild dogwoods are mostly white,
and add subtle beauty to the lower canopy
in thick woodlands of oak and walnut.

Unmistakable spring beauty.

FUTURE CHERRY WOOD
FURNITURE

I watched a neighbor today
take down an old cherry tree,
maybe 80 years old or so.
And with only a chain saw
and the help of a friend,
slice this grand old wood
into long, thin slabs.

To be air dried,
maybe 2 years or more,
and crafted into fine
dining room furniture.

I asked my woodworker friend
to call me when the transformation begins.

(Watch for my future blog and photos
to see the fruits of his labor.)

OUR TURBULENT
BEAUTIFUL SUN

NASA has just released breathtaking images
of our sun, thanks to the work of their
Solar Dynamics Observatory,
or SDO satellite.

The SDO has watched the sun everyday
for three years straight.

This is what they saw.

(It's even more amazing in the
SDO time-lapse video --
two pictures every day for 3 years.)

(The music is awesome.)

RIVERS CRESTING TODAY

Missouri area rivers crested last night,
even though it continues to rain.

(OK, we've got enough water now.)

Enough!

PRO GOLF
COMES TO THE INNER CITY

"PGA REACH" is reaching out to
inner city youth, promoting classroom attendance,
teaching recreational activities (yes, golf),
and improving career options to youth.

The first PGA REACH program was started
in St. Louis by members of Bellerive Country Club
and a partnership with the PGA Gateway Chapter.
It is now being adopted on a nationwide basis.

Bellerive is sponsoring the 74th Sr. PGA Tournament
(May 21-26, 2013), so it is no accident that
the 2012 PGA Champion, Roger Chapman,
was in town promoting the national tourney.

Chapman and St. Louis baseball legend, Ozzie Smith,
gave some golf pointers to lucky youngsters
enrolled in the program.

This is a great way to introduce the sport of golf
to youth who would otherwise have no way
of learning or playing a sport
not familiar to the inner city.
(And reducing the high school dropout rate.)

ROGUE DINING GUESTS
TREATED TO SHAKESPEARE

. . . with gourmet courses
between scenes.

Professional actors put on HENRY V
with flavors of French and British cuisine
to celebrate the victory at Agincourt.

The dessert course featured dumplings
poached in pure Canadian maple syrup,
topped with blueberry compote.

Yum.
