Pic Today 8/15/14

LILIES WITHOUT LEAVES

Resurrection Lilies are blooming
everywhere this time of year,
and they always seem "naked" somehow.

Bright pink flowers on bare stems.
No leaves, no foliage.

Perhaps it's why they're always called
Surprise Lilies (lycoris squamigera),
when they appear mid-August
after their leaves have sprouted in June,
and then disappeared.

It's always a "surprise" to see their
pink blooms late in the summer.
