ONE EGYPTIAN WOMAN

This is how a Roman artist
saw a middle-aged woman
when he painted her portrait
in the 2nd century AD.

Big eyes.
Noble lineage.
Classic features.
(And those earrings.)

The status of Egyptian women
was high in 2nd century Rome.
Commissioned portraits by
Greek artists were common.

Her eyes followed me
around the gallery
when I visited the museum
to escape the cold weather
that has descended upon us.

  1. A very impressive portrait! What a face - intelligent and a little bit sad... Unfortunately we will never know something more about that woman.
    Thank you for sharing, Rick!
