CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL
UNDER CONSTRUCTION

40 highly skilled artisans
from the city of Zigong
in China's Sichuan province
have been busy sewing, building
and working for the past month,
at Missouri Botanical Garden.

They are installing 22 grand displays
in preparation for the Lantern Festival,
due to open May 23 - August 22.

Their construction materials are
steel, wire, hand sewn silk, paint
and 300,000 porcelain tea cups and saucers.

Their creations come to life
on a grand scale,
as they stretch, paint and sew
brilliant silk over steel forms.

They join tea cups, plates and saucers
and tie each one into place
with hand-tied string.
(Look close at the elephants
rearing on hind legs.)

And as if these creations are not
impressive enough,
each silk and steel creation
is illuminated from within
for a spectacular night time show.

(Definitely worth a visit, at night.)

  2. A very nice festival, plenty of light!
We don´t have that kind of festival here. We have one, from time to time, to recreate the atmosphere of the Portuguese Discoveries. :-)
