St. Louis Union Station,
built in 1894,
was once the largest and busiest
passenger rail terminal in the world!
Today it is one of America's great
historic destinations, and home of
a grand hotel (Double Tree/Hilton)
in downtown St. Louis.
The grand hall lobby features
Romanesque archs, gold leafed detail,
magnificent stained glass windows
and a 280-foot high clock tower.
In the 1940s, it handled 100,000 passengers a day!
The famous photo of Harry Truman
holding the erroneous Chicago Tribune headline,
"Dewey Defeats Truman" was shot here,
as Truman headed back to Washington, D.C.
following the 1948 presidential election.
