MUDCRACKS
ON THE MERAMEC

Mudcracks are sedimentary patterns
formed on river banks
(seen here on recently flooded Meramec River)
as muddy sediment dries and contracts.

Natural cracks form as the top layer
tries to shrink while the soil below
stays the same size.

Individual cracks spread and join up
forming an inner-connected polygonal network
as the river bank dries.
(Beautiful.)

Seeds are quick to sprout in these cracks,
stabilizing the river bank
(until the next flood.)
