GINKGO'S GOLDEN FANS
The ginkgo tree is easily
my favorite tree in autumn.
Native to China, the ginkgo
(also known as the maidenhair tree)
is a "living fossil,"
with specimen fossils dating back
Its fan-shaped leaves are unmistakable,
turning a deep saffron yellow each autumn.
And they drop their leaves all at once,
covering the ground beneath in a golden carpet.
The ginkgo is prized in Buddhist culture,
with its nuts and seeds prized
in Chinese medicines and cuisine.
The tree's tenacity may be seen in
Hiroshima, Japan, where 6 ginkgo trees
were among the few living things
to survive the atomic bomb blast in 1945.
The beautiful ginkgo show
is happening now!
