Pic Today 5/4/16

WHO COULD RESIST?

The beautiful hibiscus flower
seems desperate for pollination.

Giant blossoms, brilliant colors,
lengthy pistils reaching out
(or is it stamens?) . . .
all the right signals to
passerby pollinators!

But nothing to worry about!

Hibiscus flowers are "easy,"
with a fail-safe backup plan
for reproduction.

Hummingbirds take care of the job.
Bees, wasps, almost any flying insect, too.
But hibiscus is also a self-pollinator,
able to pollinate itself in the wind.

(No fun.)
