THE THAW CONTINUES

Unseasonably warm temps
  help remove remaining ice.

  As February draws near.

WHERE PINBALL WIZARDS PLAY

At the Silver Ballroom Pinball Pub

Where record scores

WINTER WATERCRESS

Took some chef friends
down to the Meramec cabin
to harvest wild winter watercress.

Watercress thrives in spring water
year round, if it's close to the source
(even in freezing cold weather.)

Wild watercress is sweet and tangy,
and full of vitamins.

January watercress.
What a treat!

FOLD AND CUT
KIRIGAMI

Trying my hand at the
   ancient art of Kirigami.

All you need is paper and scissors.

Much easier than it looks.

(Free patterns on the internet.
Just search "kirigami.")

CACTI SYMMETRY

Winter months are a perfect time
to appreciate the symmetry of cactus.

The ribs, the spines, the needles.
What great design.

Such beautiful mathematics.

EVENING SUN
OLD COURT HOUSE

Last rays of the sun,
downtown St. Louis.

CYCLAMEN PERFECTION

The beauty of cyclamens.

My favorite winter season
flowering houseplant.

So easy on the eyes.

SIGNS IN THE WOODS

Geometry
on a winter hike.

Lines, circles, crosses
laid on winter leaves.

Maybe it's a sign.
Or buried treasure.

Or just random beauty.

WINTER WARM SPELL

Our unseasonal warm weather
has bulbs sprouting up.

Sunny and 75˚ in January!

Confusing to some plants and animals.
Especially when it was near zero
one week ago.

Go back to sleep Mother Nature.
We're not finished with winter.

WORKING WITH CLAY

Whether it's the round feel
of a simple clay bowl
in the hands of an
autistic young student,

or a flower petal turtle
from the mind and hands
of an highschool art student,

the tactile pleasure of
working with clay
is therapeutic joy.

Such a satisfying class.

VIEW FROM ROOM 665

Missed yesterday's Pic-A-Day
due to required hospital stay
at Missouri Baptist Hospital.

Confined to bed for tests.
(View from private room seen here.)

Restricted diet included
lime green gelatin treat.   Yum.

Now for the good news:
Biopsies proved negative!

Pic-A-Day back on schedule.

(Just in time for Inauguration Day.)

FACES IN THE ICE

Water has a way
of freezing and melting
into beautiful shapes.

Each snowflake is a
perfect example.

Take this riverbank pool;
ice melting from our
recent thaw.

I see a face.

FOGGY DAY
IN KIRKWOOD TOWN

The weather warmed  up,
and the ice is now gone.

And with all this moisture,
the fog is here to stay.

50's and 60's all week long.

(Who's in charge of this weather,
anyway?)

WHAT THE ICE STORM
LEFT BEHIND

On every tree, every bush,
nothing escaped the 3-day ice storm.

Even as it now melts,
and temperatures warm,
it leaves a beautiful show
of icy wonder.

COVERED WITH ICE

No escaping it.

Everything's covered in ice.

3-day ice storm freezes St. Louis.

Like being encased in glass!

THIS SAYS IT ALL

This is the weekend
when everything was coated with ice!

Cars, roads, sidewalks, trees, lawns.
Nothing escaped this ice storm.

So . . .
streets were empty, schools closed,
shopping centers deserted.

Time to stay at home.
Unexpected peaceful retreat.

☺️

CLIMBING
AT THE CITY MUSEUM

Climb, if you dare,
on a warm, windy day,
outside the City Museum
in downtown St. Louis.

This creative recycling meca
for young and old
is a great destination,
year round.

The outdoor climbing jungle
is for the young and adventurous.

MIGHTY "MO"
FLOWS AGAIN

Our sudden "warm spell"
(in the 60's today)
has flushed the ice downstream
on the mighty Missouri River.

The "mighty Mo" flows again.

This photo taken at St. Charles, MO,
the final "civilized stop" (1804)
for the Lewis & Clark Expedition
on their historic river journey
to the Northwest coast.

SNOW MAN
R.I.P.

It's a sad, slow death
but a certain one.

Poor Frosty.
He didn't have a chance
in this sudden warm spell.

THE THAW IS ON

Finally,
the near-zero recent weather
has released its hold on us.

Upper 20's last night,
40's today.
Ice and snow disappearing.

50's and 60's later this week.

(It will feel like the Bahamas.)

4 BARN QUILTS

Winter quilts.
It's bitter cold.

I love how they're
showing up everywhere.

(3 degrees, this morning.
     7 below, counting the wind.)
