WINTER HAS BEGUN

Sunday afternoon,
sunny and warm.

Monday morning,
freezing cold,
ice and snow!

Yikes.

SPIDERS HATE THESE

See these strange green
brain-like fruits on the ground
these days?

They're Osage Oranges,
or "hedge apples",
and they're falling
from their host tree now
(Maclura Pomifera).

They're heavy, so not a good idea
to park under these mighty trees.
They'll dent your car for sure.

They're natural repellants to spiders,
so you can place them where ever
you have spiders.   They last about
3 months before spoiling.

GOD'S EYE FEATHER
WALL HANGING

Hanging at the cabin.

Everytime we find a feather
(turkey, bald eagle, owls,
great blue heron),
it is added to this wall hanging.

A blessing and good luck.

brilliant fall colors.

I love the patterns.

ANOTHER VINTAGE MOTEL ROOM

Starting in 1938, the famous Route 66
went from Chicago, through Missouri,
and out west to San Diego.

There are some rare preserved examples
(like this one in Cuba, Missouri)
that must have been cozy,
inexpensive sleep-overs en route
to the west coast.

What an adventure.

ROUTE 66 ORIGINAL

A survivor.
One of the first "motels"
along Route 66.

America took to the roads,
with the birth of Route 66.
2-lane highway from Chicago
to Santa Monica, California.

Some sections are still recognized
as "original route", with preserved
original motel units,
like this one in Cuba, Missouri.

Cozy, huh?

THE LEAVES OF AUTUMN

I love the colors, the tones,
each one.

Neighbors are obsessed with raking.

I'm obsessed with recycling
back to the earth.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES:
THE HUMAN TOLL

Our hats off to the 20,000 firefighters,
and the 1,000 volunteer prison inmates,
who continue fighting the fierce blazes
in endangered California wildfires.

And the human effort to move
threatened horses and livestock
to safer refuge.

God bless their tireless efforts.

CAN YOU IMAGINE?

80 mph winds blowing hot embers
towards your home.
Sudden mandatory evacuation orders.
Northern California, and now moving
closer to Los Angeles.

What would you take with you?

Poor helpless homeowners, farmers,
ranchers, vineyards.

God bless the thousands of firefighters
and residents who are facing
this State of Emergency.

CALIFORNIA WILD FIRES
SPREAD THROUGH WINE COUNTRY

Northern California is bracing for
another windstorm that has
already evacuated 200,000 residents
and wiped out whole vineyards
in Sonoma and Napa Valleys.

The Storm Prediction Center warned
of "extremely critical fire weather"
beginning today, amid an unprecedented
wave of power blackouts by
Pacific Gas and Electric.

Estimates predict the fires to burn
until November 7.

State officials link the increase
in wildfires to climate change.

COME SEE THE MASTERS
OF DUTCH PORTRAITURE

Come stand eye to eye
with the perfection of Rembrandt.

70 masterpieces of Dutch painting
from the 17th-century,
now at the St. Louis Art Museum.

Lifelike captures, blushed cheeks,
weathered skin, starched linen,
stiff black fabric, fur trim.

On loan from the famous collection
of Dutch portraiture, at
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

 Rembrandt up close.
Don't miss it.

Now through January 12, 2020.

HISTORIC ROUTE 66

Starting in 1927,
motorists could "get their kicks"
driving from Chicago to L.A.
on Route 66.

Mostly a 2-lane paved highway,
it was promoted as an
adventurous way to see the USA.
Eventually made obsolete by
an interstate highway system,
there are still sections that remain
including stations and outdated motels
(as the original motel in Cuba, MO,
seen above.)

Cozy, huh?

HOW TO LOVE BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Harvest fresh sprouts off the stem.
Cut in half, toss lightly oil
and fresh ground pepper.

In a separate pan,
dice a thick slice of pancetta.
Saute until crisp, and drain.

In a roasting pan,
spread evenly in a
400˚ oven for 30 minutes
until edges are crisp.

Season with fresh ground nutmeg
and parmesan cheese.

And serve.

You now love brussels sprouts.
