TOASTED RAVIOLI
A ST. LOUIS TRADITION

Origins of this local favorite
all point to "the hill,"
a predominantly Italian
neighborhood in St. Louis.

Waiter Mickey Garagiola,
older brother of hall-of-famer
Joe Garagiola. was actually
first to taste this accidental treat,
when ravioli was accidentally
dropped into the deep fryer at
Mama's On The Hill.

Several Italian restaurants have
since claimed the origin of this
tasty first course . . . which is always
deep fried, dusted with parmesan cheese,
and served with marinara sauce.

Yum.

DID YOU SURVIVE
FRIDAY THE 13TH?

And the full moon?

Not everyone made it.

Here's proof!

A LIVING FOSSIL

The maindenhair tree,
or ginkgo biloba,
is easily one of the
most beautiful trees,
especially in the autumn.

With its fan shaped leaves
which turn golden in the fall,
the ginkgo is considered the
oldest living tree,
with fossils dating back
270-million years.

The small fruits ripen in
late autumn, and have many
medicinal properties.

ASYMMETRY IN NATURE

It's the exceptions in nature
that always catch my eye.

Especially as leaves turn
to the colors of autumn,
I love when the rules
are broken.

And one leaf breaks the rules,
and stands out
against the others.

  Just remember this . . .
there are no rules
that can't be broken.

PUMPKINS
HAVE ARRIVED

A new crop of fall pumpkins
has arrived at the market.

And in case you haven't
kept up with the latest varieties,
there are wonderful new
patterns and colors this year/

But for jack-o-lanterns
and pumpkin carving,
orange is best.

(Don't you agree?)

PLASTICS ARE KILLING
THE OCEANS

There's not a corner of
our oceans that aren't
contaminated by plastics.
Tiny pieces that marine life
can't digest.

Please refuse plastic bags,
bottles, straws, cups and
excess packaging.

You can live without plastic.
So can the fishes.

ROGUE 78

Yesterday's rare brunch menu
was a lucky invite to the
first 24 respondents to
the 78th Rogue Underground event.

The menu was special,
and so were the volunteers who
helped create and serve this
amazing gourmet event.

Coming up on our 10th anniversary.
10 years!   Hard to believe it.

GROCERY SHOPPING

The freshest organic vegetables,
walking distance from my door,
at our local farmers market.

God bless you, Ronnie.
You've taught me about
just picked freshness,
blueberries and real eggs.

FINDING THE SUN

I love tall sunflowers,
how they find the sun.

In all their glory.

These might be the final
warm days of summer.

May you find your sun
and your glory.

MARQUIS DE SADE
WOULD HAVE LOVED
THIS MACHINE

I just endured an MRI.

Claustrophobic torture chamber.

Still recovering from my fall
from a ladder, landing on my butt.

Pretty much non-stop pain
since that fall.

DORIAN COULD BE
THE WORST EVER

Sparing a direct hit to the
eastern coast of Florida,
hurricane Dorian is due to
hit the northern Bahamas today
as "catastrophic Category 5."

With sustained winds of 200 mph
and very heavy rains.
It's moving slow, which is bad news
lasting 24 hours or more.

The storm surge will reach 2-feet
which will mean devastation
for northern Bahama islands.

God bless and prayers go to
all those affected by Dorian.

And we still have leaders
who don't believe in climate change?

THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE

After being diagnosed with stage 4
pancreatic cancer, Jeopardy host
Alex Trebek has been aggressively
fighting it with chemotherapy,
which he has now completed.

At 79 years old, Trebek is in high spirits
and just begun taping a new season
of this 39 year running game show.

He remains positive and says his
cancer is in "near remission."

I can't imagine my daily fix
of Jeopardy without him
at the helm.

Here's today's answer . . .

Who's the famous author?

MEET WALT

Friend, neighbor,
amazing man.

Walt is our river neighbor
down at the cabin,
who lives up the hill year round
in a house he built himself.

He designed and built our deck,
fixes most of what breaks,
and is totally indispensable.

So grateful you and Carolyn
are our friends.

Lucky us.

MY OLD JEEP

It was the perfect medium
for increasing awareness
to stop the Meramec Dam.

But it was nothing
compared to the tenacity
and dedication of one man.
It was Jerry Sugerman,
more than anyone else,
responsible for stopping this
"crime against Mother Nature."

Jerry has left us this past weekend.
And we will never forget him.

The Meramec River flows freely,
because of you.

Thank you.
And God bless.

FAREWELL
JERRY SUGERMAN

Activist, environmentalist,
conservationist, teacher
and friend.

Singlehandedly and unselfishly
responsible for preventing
the building and completion
of the Meramec Dam.

Officially deauthorized in 1980.

He just never gave up,
and was responsible for saving
one of Missouri's most beautiful
free-flowing streams.

I was proud to contribute 2-years
of volunteer work to this effort,
and learned so much about
determination and perseverance.

So many people will miss you.
Especially me.

GREAT SUMMERTIME READ

Being the science geek
that I am, this is easily
one of my favorite
nonfiction books
of all time.

"Ebullient . . . a nonstop parade
of lively science stories."

Highly recommend this fun work.

THE AMAZON RAINFOREST
IS ON FIRE

The largest rainforest on earth is burning
out of control.

Most of earths oxygen comes from
this precious resource, not to mention
the rare plants and animals,
and the undiscovered medicines
from this huge jungle.

And Brazil's president Bolsonaro,
who denies climate change to begin with,
blames his critics responsible
for setting the fire.

Let's see now,
who does he remind me of.

Hmmmm.

PAW PAW PATCH

As the song says
"Come on boys, let's go find her,
way down yonder in the Paw Paw patch."

You're looking at a healthy Paw Paw patch,
that surrounds the Spring,
down at the cabin.

And now's the time to start picking them.
They're delicious.

The soft white flesh
tastes like banana custard.

Yum.

The aim is to surround more
territory than the opponent.

Invented in China more than

to be the oldest board game
continuously played to the
present day.

FORGET WHAT
CARROTS TASTE LIKE?

You still buying carrots
at the grocery store?
The orange ones in those
plastic bags?

Next time you find a local

stop in and try some
locally grown ones.

Hint --  they come in
different colors, too.

They are soooo delicious.
Loaded with vitamins, too.
