ICE PATTERNS
ALONG THE RIVER

Along the shore,
shallow river waters
show the patterns
of our changing weather.

Warm days,
followed by freezing temps,
confuse the ice

form beautiful shapes
confused by this
fickle weather.

SNOW TRACKS

65˚ yesterday,
20˚ today.

Fresh snow.

Thinkin' this was
a "dad pushing a stroller."

FINDING FUNGUS

Hiking in the woods.

Warm spell, no ice today.

Finding nature expressing itself,
in lichen and fungus.

It's a whole 'nother world.
Love it.

WINTER LICHEN

Cold rainy days
are the best times
to discover winter lichen.

On Missouri oaks,
especially on wet bark,
in winter woods.

A beautiful medicinal
slow-growing organism,
part fungus, part alga.

What we don't know.
So beautiful.

SURVIVING
THE ICE STORM

Sunday ice storm
covered our city
in ice!

Every street.
Every side walk.
Every stairway.

Wait.  How can I get
to my Sunday morning
coffee shop?

Thank God
for golf shoes!

HARD HIKING

Down where the Missouri River
meets the Mississippi
is the Ted Jones Missouri State Park
where you can hike down
to the confluence of the 2 rivers.

Not far from where Lewis and Clark
set out on their Corps of Discovery river route
to the Northwest Passage.

Cottonwoods and tough river vines
are so thick, it's hard to make your way
to see where the river waters mix.

Tough going.

ROUTE 66
MOTEL SIGNS

Original 66 Auto Court sign,
now at the entrance to the old
Chain of Rocks bridge.

This bridge once crossed
the Mississippi River, just
north of St. Louis.
Now closed to autos, but open
to bicycles and hikers.

Once open to the thousands of
automobiles who made the
cross-country trip out west
on Route 66.

The 66 Auto Court featured
FREE RADIO AND TV.

What an era!

THE GLORY OF ORCHIDS

The perfect retreat from our
sudden return to freezing weather.
The orchid show is now on display
at Missouri Botanical Garden.

Over 500 orchids from the
garden's living collection of
nature's most beautiful blooms
are on view in the garden's
comfortable display hall,
now through March 24.

Extraordinary beauty!

LEG OF THE ARCH

The Gateway Arch
in St. Louis

Our riverfront is graced
by this nation's tallest monument,
630 feet tall, stainless steel beauty.

Over-photographed grandeur
to be sure.

But I love shooting her arched leg,
up close, reflecting the sunlight.

Wow.

COBBLESTONE CRAFTSMANSHIP

Original cobblestone street,
St. Charles, Missouri.

Settled in 1769,
some of its original cobblestone
streets are still in use.

Beautiful craftsmanship.

FAREWELL
POLAR VORTEX

A rainbow marks the occasion,
when below zero weather retreats
and warm weather treats us
to shirt sleeve temps.

Feels so good.

FAREWELL
POLAR VORTEX

Our rivers thaw
 and flow again.

Our deep freeze temps
retreat for now.
