HISTORIC ROUTE 66

Starting in 1927,

motorists could "get their kicks"

driving from Chicago to L.A.

on Route 66.

Mostly a 2-lane paved highway,

it was promoted as an

adventurous way to see the USA.

Eventually made obsolete by 

an interstate highway system,

there are still sections that remain

including stations and outdated motels

(as the original motel in Cuba, MO,

seen above.)

One of Missouri's free-flowing streams.

The Big River is one of our 

greatest natural resources.

HOW TO LOVE BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Harvest fresh sprouts off the stem.

Cut in half, toss lightly oil

and fresh ground pepper.

In a separate pan,

dice a thick slice of pancetta.

Saute until crisp, and drain.

In a roasting pan,

spread evenly in a

400˚ oven for 30 minutes

until edges are crisp.

Season with fresh ground nutmeg

and parmesan cheese.

And serve.

You now love brussels sprouts.

SAVORY OKRA

Late summer harvest

at the Farmers Market

gives us just what we need

for stewed okra and tomatoes.

Slice okra, dredge in flour,

mix with egg mixture,

sauté with chopped tomatoes

in hot oil.  Add hot peppers 

and garlic, and stew for 5 min.

You've got a classic creole favorite.

Try it, you'll love it.

Indian corn is another name

for maize, a hard shelled corn

grown by Native Americans

for thousands of years.

It's the same variety used

in popcorn.

CARDS CLINCH CHAMPIONSHIP

ON LAST DAY OF SEASON

Cardinals left fielder Marcell Ozuna

congratulate Matt Carpenter

on his 3-run homer in yesterday's

final game of the season.

The Cards pounded the Chicago Cubs 9-0

grabbing their first post-season championship

since 2015.

They play Atlanta on Thursday

for Game 1 of the NLDS.
