WILLIAM CLARK
Brigadier General,
Governor of Missouri,
Famed Explorer
and great friend of the
Native American.
Buried here in St. Louis
at Bellefontaine Cemetery
September 1, 1838,
not far from where he and
Meriwether Lewis set out
to lead the Corps of Discovery
to discover the northwest passage.
Few knew he was friend and
passioned champion of the
native American Indians.
As inscribed on his tomb,
his words to his friend,
Thomas Jefferson:
"It is to be lamented that the
deplorable situation of the Indians
do not receive more of the
human feelings of the nation."
-- December 15, 1825
(Timeless words and feelings
to this day.)
