Goldenrod is flowering,

especially in Missouri's farmland.

And it's all too often blamed

for late summer allergies,

but it's ragweed that's the culprit,

not goldenrod.

So enjoy the golden fields,

especially now.

Just don't give goldenrod

a bum rap.

(It won't make you sneeze.)

WHEN UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL

When it comes to 

home-grown tomatoes,

perfection is not so obvious.

Ugly tomatoes are the ones

to look for.

"Ugly" is now a registered variety,

and are favored as preferred for taste.

Ugly tomatoes are heirloom tomatoes

that do not grow with the same uniform beauty

that many hybrids strive to possess.

Irregular, misshapen fruits

with impeccable flavor and taste --

that's when ugly is better!

For those residents who have

decided to stick it out,

the real danger is not the winds,

it's the tidal surge and

intense rains that follow.

Most deaths from hurricanes

are caused by drownings,

from the surge of water that follows.

Our prayers go out for the millions

of U.S. residents  affected by

this monster storm.
