RAISING WORLD CLASS ORCHIDS

Here's a behind-the-scenes look

at the private orchid greenhouses

at Missouri Botanical Garden,

responsible for the current

2016 Orchid Show

and one of the largest and finest

orchid collections in the U.S.

Over 7,000 orchid plants,

representing 2580 unique taxa

are propagated and maintained here,

representing 3202 unique species.

The first specimens were given to

Henry Shaw in 1876,

when he first established the garden here.

In 1923, the Missouri Botanical garden staff

set off to Panama and Colombia

to expand the collection, and returned

with over 5,000 specimens.

Since then the garden has been recognized

as one of the world's leading orchid collections.
