WINTER WATERCRESS

Took some chef friends

down to the Meramec cabin

to harvest wild winter watercress.

Watercress thrives in spring water

year round, if it's close to the source

(even in freezing cold weather.)

Wild watercress is sweet and tangy,

and full of vitamins.

Confusing to some plants and animals.

Especially when it was near zero

one week ago.

autistic young student,

the tactile pleasure of

Even as it now melts,

and temperatures warm,

This is the weekend

Nothing escaped this ice storm.

So . . .

streets were empty, schools closed,

shopping centers deserted.

Time to stay at home.

FLOWS AGAIN

Our sudden "warm spell"

(in the 60's today)

has flushed the ice downstream 

on the mighty Missouri River.

The "mighty Mo" flows again.

This photo taken at St. Charles, MO,

the final "civilized stop" (1804)

for the Lewis & Clark Expedition

on their historic river journey

to the Northwest coast.

Finally,

40's today.

Ice and snow disappearing.
