CAHOKIA MOUNDS
Directly across the Mississippi River
from downtown St. Louis, MO
was once the most extensive urban center
in prehistoric America.
A community of man made earthen structures,
covering 6 square miles, 120 mounds in all.
Built by ancient mound builders
from A.D. 700 to 1400.
The largest structure, Monks Mound,
still offers the best views,
and can be climbed by visitors.
Occupied until 1400
with a population of 20,000.
It may have collapsed because
of changing climate.
The visitors center is full of historic relics, carvings,
tools and arrow points.
