SUMMER'S REFRESHING

ROCKIN' AT

ATOMIC COWBOY

Memphis band, Foster McGinty,

showed up ready to rock-n-roll

at the Atomic Cowboy

in "the Grove" in midtown St. Louis.

It's good to let loose

on a Friday night,

especially when our hot steamy weather

has also decided to show up.

Thanks Foster, we love you.

GAME OF KINGS

Chess, the game of kings,

is all about strategy.

 White traditionally takes the first move;

then it's black's turn.

Did you know the player who moves first

statistically wins the game?

The St. Louis Chess Club

is a great place to enjoy a game,

including tables "out front"

on the sidewalk.

 

Whether you're playing, or learning,

the Chess Club (4657 Maryland)

is becoming a popular evening past time

in the neighborhood.

MEET KALI

He's the 850-pound orphaned polar bear

who's the highlight of the St. Louis Zoo's

new Polar Bear Point exhibit.

Orphaned as a cub, Kali was rescued

from the Alaskan wilderness and

spent 2 years at the Buffalo New York zoo

before the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation

issued a letter of agreement that

brought him to St. Louis.

Kali's new home is a 40,000-square-foot habitat

that offers visitors a 22-foot viewing window,

where the polar bear can come right up 

to the glass to greet guests.

The sea water area features a 1,000-square-foot

Arctic room with a 4-panel viewing wall.

Kali loves to swim, dive, pose for the camera,

play football, and say hi to the children.

FLOATING, LIVING

CARPET SCULPTURE

This undulating field of green

completely fills the 45-by-50 foot

interior courtyard of the

Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis,

providing viewers with a lush, living

natural experience.

Green Varnish was installed last month by

Nomad Studio (landscape architects) 

as a living installation, comprised by

thousands of tiny succulents,

and appears to float like a blanket

being unfurled against the city backdrop.

The installation receives natural sunlight

and normal rainfall, which in St. Louis

has been plentiful.

It grows (and flowers) on a bed of rocky soil

and a sandwich of permeable woven substrate. 

The installation will be on view through

mid September, and is free to the public.

A quiet retreat

where the cold waters flow

and the warm air forms clouds

just against the morning fields.

A place to hike,

and listen, 

to find tiny flowers

and quiet discoveries.

at City Garden, downtown St. Louis,

is a great way to "beat the heat."

BEST KEPT CONCERT VENUE SECRET

Word's getting out . . .

about Wildwood Springs Lodge

in Steelville, Missouri.

This 93-year-old lodge,

on a hilltop overlooking the Meramec River,

in this gorgeous float-trip country town

(population 1,200),

is attracting musicians from far and wide.

Wildwood Springs is booking performers

like Leon Russell, Taj Mahal and Marshall Tucker

in their comfy "living room" concert hall

(seats 200, standing room only),

and they're attracting national attention.

Talent loves performing here,

and then taking time off for a few days

in this beautiful part of the Ozarks.

Who wouldn't want to hear great bands,

in an intimate acoustically perfect setting,

and then crash in a century-old lodge?

Next month the fall concert schedule starts

with Pure Prairie League (remember them?),

POCO, Marshall Tucker Band, 

Blood Sweat & Tears, and the

Ozark Mountain Daredevils. 

(The first two rows of seats are cushion arm chairs.)
