FINDING THE BABY
FOR MARDI GRAS LUCK
There's a tradition at Mardi Gras time,
wishing you good fortune and luck,
when you're the lucky one to
find baby Jesus in your King Cake.
King Cakes are everywhere this week,
in celebration of Mardi Gras.
And it used to be that tiny baby figures
were baked inside each King Cake,
symbolizing the Epiphany.
Whoever found the tiny baby
was guaranteed good fortune
for the new year.
To keep people from choking,
bakers now place the baby
outside the cake, or on top.
Here's hoping the baby finds you.

Here (in Portugal) we had a similar tradition. The "King Cake" (Bolo Rei) is a Christmas tradition, the most important one, as well as "Bacalhau", the most iconic gastronomic icon of the portuguese cuisine. :)
Until a few years ago it was tradition hide a tiny gift in the inside of the cake... as well as a dry broad bean.
Who picks the present gets "lucky and fortune"... but who picks the dry broad bean has to pay another cake the next year! :))
But now it's forbidden because it may be dangerous, specially for kids.

ReplyDeleteInteresting pictures. In France, the Epiphany takes place on Jan.6th. They also call it "les rois" and whoever finds the piece is called the King!
