The Kirkwood High School shop class
was in for a rare treat . . .
to learn from master woodturner,
JoHannes Michelsen,
to turn Missouri white oak
into hats!
Michelsen passed through St. Louis
recently to pick up some freshly cut
Missouri Oak (not available in
his home state of Vermont),
and to put on a demonstration
of how to finely turn wood
into beautiful hats.
(After all, he estimates he's made
thousands in his 60 years of turning.)
The brim gets so thin and fine,
he shines lights through the grain
to tell when he's getting close.
